Meet Camila Perez-Clavarino, a Code/Art alumnus and 2024 high school graduate headed to the University of Florida where she’ll be studying Mathematics. Camila began at Code/Art as a Club Member and later became a TA during high school. She also became a Code/Art Instructor wanting to inspire other girls! Read the interview below for insight into her experience with Code/Art programs and her computer science journey!

When and how did you get introduced to Code/Art?

I discovered Code/Art through a recommendation from a teacher to my older sister, who is a year ahead of me. I started participating in the program during 6th grade and have remained involved with Code/Art throughout high school.

What were some takeaways from being a Club TA for Code/Art? What’s been your favorite memory or anecdote from leading clubs?

My experience with Code/Art taught me that I can succeed in any field, including those traditionally dominated by men. I often think about how I might have missed out on this opportunity if I hadn’t pushed myself to explore new challenges. Code/Art encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and instilled in me a sense of responsibility and the importance of working with young girls. I enjoy witnessing the excitement and creativity that the kids bring to coding when they start seeing it as an engaging activity rather than just a task. Seeing their enthusiasm and growth is always a joyful experience!

How was the transition from TA to Instructor? What inspired you to take the leap into being an Instructor?

Given my extensive experience from previous roles, teaching the lessons felt natural and not difficult. I had learned a lot from both the instructors and the TAs, which helped me transition smoothly.

Let’s talk about some future plans. What university are you going to and what are you planning to study?

I’m going to the University of Florida and I am planning on studying Mathematics and exploring options for a Computer Science minor or major. While double majoring is challenging, I’m determined to study both fields.

Do you think that Code/Art played a role in your decision to pursue a degree in STEM?

Code/Art opened doors for me by demonstrating that I can succeed in fields where women are often underrepresented. The positive influence from strong female role models not only encouraged me but also helped me realize that I could excel in these areas. Being part of such a supportive community strengthened my confidence and provided a crucial sense of support, showing me that I have the potential to thrive and continue pursuing these fields.

How did the Code/Art community support you in your pursuits and STEM-related interests? Were you challenged in any way?

The most significant support came from the older girls I looked up to as a student. They were smart, driven, and pursued their passions without being swayed by societal expectations. Their success and determination set a new standard when compared to less academically focused peers at school. This positive influence from strong female role models not only helped me grow but also gave me the confidence to take on new challenges and believe in my own potential.

Considering your experience, would you—when talking to a younger girl—recommend that they take part in a program like Code/Art and if so, why?

Absolutely! Code/Art has benefited me in numerous ways beyond promoting women in coding. Being surrounded by driven peers and positive instructors made a huge difference. It’s surprising to think that many kids don’t have access to this kind of experience. I’d highly recommend it for its many benefits that are not limited to coding.

Thank you for sharing your story with us!
