Living in South Florida, where hurricanes, floods, and other natural disasters are an annual occurrence, being prepared can make all the difference between life or death and costly damage or severe injuries. Our team, the Hazard Hunters, recognized the urgent need for an affordable, user-friendly solution to help Florida residents secure their property against these threats. However, as we developed our concept, we realized our technology could be even more versatile, expanding to babyproofing, pet safety, and accessibility improvements. Hazard Hunter became an innovative home assessment tool designed to identify objects in living spaces and provide tailored safety recommendations, helping people stay safe, comfortable, and prepared for life’s changes. Natural disasters don’t give much warning, and preparation is key to minimizing damage and ensuring safety. In Florida, the threat of hurricanes and flooding is an annual reality, and many homeowners struggle to identify vulnerabilities in their homes. Even more, the aftermath of such events can be financially devastating, especially for those unprepared. Hazard Hunter addresses this by proactively assessing potential risks and offering easy, actionable, too often overlooked safety tips, making disaster preparation more manageable and affordable. As we began working on our prototype, our product evolved to include features for babyproofing, pet safety, and accessibility. We realized that the same technology used to identify hazards for storms could also be adapted to spot risks for children, pets, or individuals with physical or sensory disabilities. By making homes safer for everyone, our solution caters to various life stages, from new parents to families with pets, and even to those adapting their homes for aging relatives or family members who might need special accommodations to make daily tasks easier and safer. Hazard Hunter is designed with families in mind – anyone looking to make their home safer, more secure, and more comfortable. Our primary audience includes homeowners in disaster-prone areas like Florida, who can use the tool to protect their properties against hurricanes, floods, and other natural disasters. However, our product’s versatility allows us to reach a broader market. New parents or grandparents preparing their homes for visiting toddlers can use the babyproofing mode to identify sharp edges, electrical outlets, or other potential dangers. Pet owners can ensure their furry friends are safe from hazardous items while also protecting their furniture from potential damage. Moreover, people caring for elderly or disabled family members can use our accessibility mode to make their homes more inclusive and navigable, enhancing the quality of life for loved ones. Hazard Hunter’s potential goes beyond just one-time use. It’s a lifelong investment that adapts to the user’s changing needs, offering safety insights for various scenarios throughout life. With some improvements via implementation of more complex AI and precise sensors, additional research, and advice from specialists, we can make Hazard Hunter even more versatile, customizable, and effective. Creating Hazard Hunter was no easy feat. One of our biggest challenges was figuring out how to efficiently scan a house and identify hazards. Our vision was to create a Roomba-like attachment that would navigate through a home autonomously, gathering data and updating alerts about potential dangers to a mobile app. However, building this from scratch required advanced hardware and software integration, which was beyond our current resources. To overcome this, we adapted our approach for the prototype by using computer vision with a laptop camera. Users manually scan their rooms with a phone or laptop camera, and our web-based app analyzes the input, identifying potential hazards and offering safety recommendations. This not only allowed us to demonstrate the technology’s capability but also laid the groundwork for future integration with a Roomba attachment. One of our biggest strengths was our team’s diverse set of skills and perspectives. Each member brought unique expertise, from coding and computer vision to elderly and child care to user experience design. This allowed us to tackle complex challenges more effectively, combining our knowledge to find innovative solutions. Throughout the project, we learned the importance of adaptability. Our original idea of building a Roomba attachment was ambitious, but by shifting to a web-based prototype, we could still showcase our vision without being hindered by technical limitations. This taught us that setbacks can be opportunities for creativity and growth. By maintaining open communication and respecting each other’s ideas, we cultivated an environment where everyone felt empowered to contribute. Our ultimate goal for Hazard Hunter is to make home safety accessible, effective, and convenient for everyone. We envision a future where our Roomba attachment can autonomously scan homes, using advanced sensors like vibration analysis and infrared cameras to assess structural integrity and insulation gaps. This would allow our system to provide even more detailed safety recommendations, helping homeowners prepare for natural disasters with confidence. We also plan to expand our alternative modes, including more nuanced customization options. For instance, users could receive advice tailored to specific types of disabilities or select hazard alerts relevant to certain types of disasters. This level of personalization would make Hazard Hunter even more valuable as a long-term home safety tool. As technology evolves, we want to integrate with other smart home systems, allowing Hazard Hunter to become part of a connected, intelligent safety network. We want to create a system that not only identifies hazards but also communicates with your smart devices to take preventive actions automatically or exchanges data to identify threats that might not be noticeable from certain angles. Hazard Hunter started as a solution to a local problem but grew into a versatile, life-changing tool that caters to a wide range of needs. From protecting homes against natural disasters to ensuring safety for children, pets, and people with disabilities, our product is designed to adapt to the user’s lifestyle. Our journey has been full of challenges, but through creativity, collaboration, and resilience, we’ve built a product that has the potential to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives. With continuous innovation and user-focused design, we are confident that Hazard Hunter will become an essential tool for homes everywhere. Hazard Hunter is more than just a product – it’s a commitment to safety, security, and comfort for all families, no matter where life takes them. |
