Summer 2024: Empowering Students through Creative Coding Programs

Aug 10, 2024 | All News, Youth Coding Programs

Summer is a time for growth and discovery, and this season we expanded our reach, welcoming new students into our dynamic creative coding programs. We also had the pleasure of partnering with various organizations to bring exciting opportunities to students across South Florida. Keep reading to discover the transformative experiences our summer camps offered this year!

Girls Rise Up – Miami’s Inaugural Cohort!

This summer, we proudly partnered with STEM From Dance to launch the first-ever Girls Rise Up program in Miami! Our collaboration brought groundbreaking and inclusive computer science education to students of all ages. Over the course of three weeks, 14 campers explored the intersection of dance and coding. They not only gained technical skills but also connected with industry leaders who provided insight into careers in tech and the arts. Check out our recap video to hear directly from our campers and catch a glimpse of their final showcase!

New Summer Club in Broward

For the first time ever, we launched an 8-week summer club at the Alvin Sherman Library at Nova Southeastern University in Broward. This Code/Art club was led by trained Educator, Mya Carr and, with her help, students were introduced to various coding languages and platforms in a fun and collaborative environment. Using an art-infused curriculum, club members learned to code animations, games, mobile apps, websites, and digital art.

Code/Art’s Creative Coding Camps for Girls

The excitement continued with our Creative Coding Camps for Girls, where students dove into the world of creative coding, learning how to turn code into artwork. We hosted two camps this summer: an in-person, two-week camp for rising 6th–9th graders at Big Brothers Big Sisters, and a virtual camp for rising 3rd–6th graders, welcoming participants from across the country. Throughout both camps, 23 students were introduced to computer programming while also hearing from female tech leaders who shared their personal journeys and explored how technology and art come together in exciting ways.

“Code/Art is SUCH a great place!! I’d highly recommend it to any other girl interested in the wonderful world of coding! The counselors are nice, the PowerPoints are legible and very easy to understand, they teach us about cyber security, all fun stuff like that!”

– Layla D., Summer Camp student

We’re incredibly proud of all the students who joined us this summer, and we extend a heartfelt thank-you to their supportive parents. A special shoutout to our amazing instructors, TAs, volunteers, and partners for making this summer unforgettable. We can’t wait to see you all next year for more creativity, coding, and fun!
